Quick Reference Guide

  • No Tandem Use—No official symbol of the university should be used in tandem with another official university symbol. For example, the official university logotype should not be used with the Brookings seal on the same surface.
  • Heraldic Device (Shield)—The university shield (or crest) may be used only as part of the official university seal or logotype (both are federally registered trademarks). The shield (or crest) may not be used alone.
  • Outline Shield—This variation of the logo shield has been created to allow designers the freedom to use this iconic WashU emblem with more design flexibility. It can be used as an accent graphic or main graphic and it can be cropped. It can be produced in any single brand color and can be used alone.
  • Seal—Each use of the official university seal requires special permission of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs.
  • WashU—WashU is our unofficial name and may be used alone. WashU is correctly written with a capital W and capital U, with no space between Wash and U, and without periods.
  • W, WU, WUSTL—Each use of of W, WU and WUSTL requires special permission of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs.
  • ® and TM –All names and visual representations of Washington University in St. Louis are exlusive property and protected trademarks of the university. This includes all word marks, service marks, names, name variants, nicknames, logotypes, logos, insignia, shields, seals, designs, devises, or symbols that refer to Washington University in St. Louis. Also included are any words, phrases, or images that imply association with the university.
    • ® must be used with federally registered marks. The university’s federally registered marks are: the versions of the logotype, “Washington University,” “WashU” and the official university seal. TM must be used with all other trademarks, including the complete name “Washington University in St. Louis”. Please direct any questions regarding use of ® and TM to the licensing office.

  • Official Colors—the official university colors are:
    • Red: PMS 200
    • Green: PMS 342
    • Tan: PMS 4685
  • Minimum Size—the minimum size of the following logos (in print) are:
    • 1 line logotype—No smaller than 3 1/8”
    • 2 line horizontal logotype—No smaller than 1 ½”
    • 2 line centered logotype –No smaller than 1 ½”
    • 3 line logotype—No smaller than 1 1/8”
  • Campus Images—All campus facilities and grounds are the exclusive property of Washington University in St. Louis. Use of images of the campus or university buildings for any retail or commercial purpose, for endorsements, promotions, and the like—by any person or entity – requires the prior written, official permission of the university.
